Foster Home or Shelter?
When you adopt from one of our foster homes, the foster family can tell you about the bunny's personality, litterbox skills, recent health, and how he or she came into the foster program. When you adopt from a shelter, you're not likely to get this kind of information. You are, however, possibly saving a bunny from euthanasia. Either way, you're spared the expense of spay or neuter surgery, which can cost $100 or more, and you're creating an opening for the next homeless bunny.
Looking for a Buddy for your Bunny?
Note: The least difficult couple to introduce is usually a neutered male and a spayed female.
Our Rabbit Care Guide offers tips for adding another rabbit to your family. Bunny Buddies volunteers can also loan you the video "Introducing Rabbits" or advise you in person at one of our Events. For best results, bring your bunny with you, to see who he or she likes best!
Bunny Buddies' Adoption Guidelines
Our guidelines may appear rigid, but they serve a purpose. Since these rabbits have already been homeless once, it's our goal to provide each rabbit with a permanent, loving home where he or she can flourish for the rest of his or her life.
- Bunny Buddies adopts to indoor homes only. We can advise you on bunny-proofing, litterbox training, and housing (see our Rabbit Care Guide).
- All bunnies are spayed or neutered before becoming available for adoption.
- We do not separate bonded pairs.
- If you already have bunnies, dogs, other pets, or children, we can help with matchmaking.
Rabbits should never be a child's full responsibility:
- Children under 12 should meet the rabbit first.
- Dogs must be obedience-trained and should meet the rabbit first.
- Any other rabbits in your home should be spayed or neutered and should meet the new rabbit first. We can help you choose a vet.
Adoption Fees
Shelter adoption fees vary by shelter. Bunny Buddies charges $35 per rabbit or $50 per pair. This includes a copy of House Rabbit Handbook, by Marinell Harriman, (when in print) and the option of buying a one-year Bunny Buddies membership for $15.
